Burnage 20-21 Douglas ‘Revenge Is Sweet’ Isle of Man Examiner – ‘Revenge is a dish best served cold’ and Douglas kept this one chilled from September when Burnage pillaged a 20-month unbeaten Port-e-Chee record. Playing a league match on an artificial surface for the first time may have been a disadvantage for Douglas, but they deserved a dramatic win that takes them back up to 5th place. Nick Brooker picked off a careless Burnage pass and rocketed 80 metres out of defence to score under the posts after 10 minutes, with Aidan O’Shea adding the extras. Scrummage and lineouts were closely matched, even with Douglas fielding Niall Killey at second-row and Ralph Clarke at hooker in new positions. Burnage struck back after 15 minutes when Harvey Derby finished off a maul, Rhys Evans converted, and with tails up scored again as Evans punished a Douglas offside with a penalty. Douglas flanker Akkie Van Den Berg picked up a knock and was replaced by Craig McGee, and Douglas had a 10-14 lead when Max Singer and the returning Sam Games combined to make a hole through Burnage lines, winger James Maddrell cruising over and O’Shea adding the conversion. . After the half time break Burnage went ahead 15-14 when Ryan Grange stretched out to score, but Evans could’nt add the conversion and would rue the miss. Owen Carvin continued his rise through the ranks and subbed Dave Hinks in the Douglas front row, and with 60 minutes gone Liam Kirkpatrick charged through the tacklers to score a try. O’Shea’s conversion for 15-21 was crucial, and as Burnage desperately sought to avoid losing three league matches in a row, the pressure ramped up on both sides. In the 80th minute Burnage flanker Sean McRae crossed after six phases of possession finally forced an opening in the Douglas defence. The conversion kick to win was tricky but Evans’ effort just slid wide of the posts to give Douglas their fourth away win of the season and keep within range of the top three.
