Entry is free and all participants will receive a medal, t-shirt and a hotdog.

This month will see the Douglas Rugby Club host the inaugural Tag Rugby School’s Cup.

All of the island’s primary schools are invited to enter the competition, which is open to school years two and three, on Sunday November 26 2023, starting at 1pm.

The club said: ‘We welcome all primary schools to get involved for a fun afternoon of tag rugby matches! Schools can enter one or more teams of four players.’

The teams can be made up and boys and girls for the non-contact tournament, with the club keen to open up the sport to as many children who want to give it a try (if you’ll pardon the pun).

Douglas coach, Mark Varley, told Gef that the club is excited to launch the Tag Rugby School’s Cup this year.

He said: ‘We have a thriving junior section here at Douglas Rugby Club, and we take kids from as young as 3 years old and upwards which is brilliant. With the School’s Cup, we wanted to put on an exciting event for the tag rugby age groups to help grow the game, and to show the schools and parents how great rugby can be for boys and girls of this age.

‘It’s the ultimate team sport and it’s nice to see the kids come together and learn about teamwork, resilience, respect, and discipline, while having lots of fun at the same time. We welcome all kids to come and get involved with Douglas Rugby Club on Sundays at 1pm throughout the rugby season in general, and anyone that is interested in taking a look at what we have to offer, should pop down to the School’s Cup tournament on the 26th November for a fun afternoon!’

So far, at least 10 of the island’s primary schools have entered the inaugural School’s Cup and some schools have even entered more than one team. The tournament is likely to feature more than 100 children from the various schools, and it is still not too late to enter!

Entry is free and all participants will receive a medal, t-shirt and a hotdog.

To enter a team or for more information, please contact Brett Pyke (Douglas RUFC Community Development Officer) before Friday November 10. Brett@douglasrufc.com – 07624 248097

The club has also thanked Santander International for its continued support of Douglas RUFC and to Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management – UK, Channel Islands and Isle of Man for sponsoring the event!
